I have been trying to simplify my process and final outcome, and I think I finally have a hang of it at least for my personal work. This piece is only four \x26amp;#8220;color\x26amp;#8221; separations; black, semi-opaque white, and two different transparent greys. I have come to the realization that adding any more separations just complicates the whole thing and makes it a muddy mess. I should also point out that this is probably one of my favorite pieces I have done in years. I have been slowly but surely trying to work the \x26amp;#8220;mystery\x26amp;#8221; back into my work, and I think I finally stumbled onto the sweet spot. That, or I have been looking at way too much of Sam\x26amp;#8217;s work.\x0aThis \x26amp;#8220;mystery sweet spot\x26amp;#8221; is something I am constantly flirting with, and once in a blue moon get right. Things tend to lean towards too overtly sexual or too overtly creepy, and it is a rare occasion when I hit the mark in between. I think it mainly just has to do with my emotional state at the time. I had mentioned in a previous post doing \x26amp;#8220;I need to get laid\x26amp;#8221; drawings, which obviously usually entails the image being too overtly sexual. The \x26amp;#8220;mystery sweet spot\x26amp;#8221; seems to usually involve an emotional state that the insufferable Stephanie Brown refers to as my \x26amp;#8220;unicorn\x26amp;#8221; phase. So somewhere between being bitter and tossing and turning in my sleep, I can actually make a good drawing every once in a while.\x26nbsp;\x0aOn a side note, I notice this morning that a lot of print orders through Big Cartel\x26nbsp;had been being sent to my spam folder. At least for me, 9 times out of 10 I prefer their sketches more than their actual finished pieces. And maybe its an ego thing or a self confidence thing, but I have never been one to show a lot of sketches to anyone. It was 1994, and Mega Man 4 had just come out. This was back when Nintendo Power was still king. I think I carried the issue where they explained the boss order around for months. I just couldn\x26#8217;t stop drawing the characters over and over and over. I was obsessed.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eBut the funny thing is, I hadn\x26#8217;t even played Mega Man 4\x26#8230;and I wouldn\x26#8217;t until years later in high school when I learned about emulators (unless I am forgetting some game rental from Kroger when I was 10\x26#8230;but my brother usually got to chose the game). The only real experience I had had at the time with the Blue Bomber was Mega Man 2\x26#8230;I was really into Metal Man, but I can only assume that that was due to the fact that he was the only character I could beat when I was 7-8. But it didn\x26#8217;t matter if I had played the games or not\x26#8230;.I loved Mega Man. And now over two decades later, they are still some of my favorite video games ever.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eBut the Mega Man in MY head when I was 10, was not the Mega Man of \x26#8220;reality\x26#8221;. I saw him as some sort of tragic figure. In my version he was the last remaining \x26#8220;good\x26#8221; robot, and human kind had long since perished. He was the last of a long dead breed, still carrying the torch for humanity. And as much as I loved all the characters and all the designs\x26#8230;.I never really liked Mega Man\x26#8217;s design. For such a tough little motherfucker, he certainly didn\x26#8217;t look the part. The Mega Man of my 10 year old mind was one serious son of a bitch.\u00a0\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eSo now, 20 years later\x26#8230;here is the Mega Man I wanted. For any fans out there, hopefully you can spot some nods to the classic design as well as Mega Man X and that god awful Mega Man Legends (seriously, what kid in 1997 that was playing playstation new trivia like \x26#8220;What Huey Lewis and the News album reached the highest on the billboard charts?\x26#8221;!?!? Unfortunately due to the quick in and out of being an illustrator, I am used to rushing to finalize things\x26#8230;.which in all honesty, deciding when something is done or not is one of the hardest parts of my job. So I have been trying to make a conservative effort not to rush finalizing personal work\x26#8230;because really, there is no need. People always ask me why I dwell so much in my past relationships and openly refuse to actually date anyone for any extended period of time. And while I am never really able to come up with a straight answer, at least it fuels my ability to draw sexed up women without even trying. You can always tell if I am getting laid by the fact that the quality of my work dips drastically.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eI wish I never had to draw anything but half-naked girls and bees.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eSo as mentioned before I went home for a bit to visit my mom and her managerie, and then quickly rushed home to say goodbye to all of my Chicago friends before they went to go visit their respective families for the holidays. This basically meant that I was in my apartment alone for over a week, including Christmas Eve and day. Now initially I thought this would be a great idea\x26#8230;I could catch up on work and sleep and finally get around to playing Fable III (WAY too much Fable III). But I ended up biting off a little more than I could chew\x26#8230;.I started to go stir crazy pretty quickly. I cleaned the hell out of my apartment and inadvertently got drunk while doing so (which was nice, because I woke up and it was like Christmas elves had snuck into my apartment and cleaned it while I was sleeping). Christmas has never really been the same since my father passed\x26#8230;so I figured I wouldn\x26#8217;t be missing out on much. But apparently even a stone-hearted bastard like myself can get a little homesick every once in a while.\u00a0\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eAnd speaking of such, I woke up this morning to this email:\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3e\x3cimg src=\x22http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwuh61leIb1qb9ris.jpg\x22/\x3e\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eNow my father Ray Woodson has been dead since 2001. At first I thought the email was some sort of really fucked up joke from a family member (yes, we are definitely that kind of family). But when I went into Google Plus to check it out it just ended up being some other Ray Woodson\x26#8217;s photo album that I apparently was inadvertently added to. Now mind you, I have no idea how something like that could happen\x26#8230;but nonetheless, it got me pretty shaken up. The world seems to be reminding to be miserable a lot more often than it used to these days.\u00a0\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eBut to end on a lighter note; I drew this portrait of my nephew for my brother and his girlfriend for Christmas. I ended up doing a couple versions of it, and this was the only one that I really felt captured the little dude. It had been so long since I busted out traditional media (let alone the coffee stains of my college days), that I was a little unsteady at first\x26#8230;.but in the end I think it came out super nicely. I spend so much time trying to make things look hand-done with photoshop, that I forget how good it feels to just lay it all down on the paper. Now let\x26#8217;s hope that my brother and his girlfriend don\x26#8217;t happen to read this blog before they get their Christmas package tomorrow.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3e\x3cimg src=\x22http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwuhgqPund1qb9ris.jpg\x22/\x3e\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eSo the secret project is still going strong\x26#8230;so much so in fact that I have delayed all other projects until the secret project is done. And while I am really enjoying working on it, it will be nice to finally have it behind me. At this point I feel that it is pretty mandatory for me to do some personal work while working on the secret project\x26#8230;not only to keep myself sane, but there is also a lot of stuff I want to get down on paper before it vanishes into the ether. So keep an eye posted on this blog for some of that upcoming stuff. Oh, and there might also be a complete website overhaul in the near future as well.\u00a0\x3c/p\x3e\x0a \x3c/div\x3e\x0a \x3c/li\x3e\x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a \x3cli class=\x22tumblr_post tumblr_text_post\x22\x3e\x0a \x0a \x3cdiv class=\x22tumblr_title\x22\x3eHoney In The Pot, Wheat In The Fields. \x3c/div\x3e\x0a \x0a \x0a \x3cdiv class=\x22tumblr_body\x22\x3e\x0a \x3cp\x3e\x3cimg src=\x22http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lw7wvnIDdP1qb9ris.jpg\x22/\x3e\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eSo as expected, I completely failed keeping up my end of the bargain of keeping this blog fresh. But unlike in the past, I actually feel kind of bad about it.\u00a0\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eWork has been crazy the last month or so, but unfortunately it is all stuff that I either can not show or is too mundane to peak anyone\x26#8217;s interest. But that being said, I do have a handful of personal projects chugging along in the background to show off.\u00a0\x3c/p\x3e\x0a\x3cp\x3eI am going back to the motherland tomorrow for a few days, but will be back on monday to spend the holidays alone in my apartment. So I can only imagine that I will be posting on here during that time out of boredom and desperate need for human interaction\x26#8230;.so really, nothing new.\x3c/p\x3e\x0a \x3c/div\x3e\x0a \x3c/li\x3e\x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a \x0a\x0a \x0a \x0a\x3c/ol\x3e');
