Something I really like (and I assume most people do as well) is seeing artist’s creative process. At least for me, 9 times out of 10 I prefer their sketches more than their actual finished pieces. And maybe its an ego thing or a self confidence thing, but I have never been one to show a lot of sketches to anyone. I tried to make an animated GIF of my process for the Mega Man piece which was something like 20 different sketches to get to the final piece. But since I am a troglodyte and cant use photoshop to save my life, my attempts of making it failed.
This is some of my process for a piece I am working on that is a VERY long overdue personal commission. What you are seeing is a cleaned up version of about a tenth of the actual sketches that went into this…more than anything, just so you can see what the hell is going on. When I am not using a brush I draw exclusively with a technical mechanical pencil….for some reason using an actual wooden pencil makes me nauseous (in the same way that chewing on styrofoam makes some people crazy, its a guttural thing).
If there is anything that can be taken away from this, its that I am terribly lazy. I don’t waste a lot of time making a lot of sketchy messes, and I very rarely second guess my lines. And when all else fails, I just use fabric and creases as filler.
I am not sure of how I am going to handle the final execution of this. It is going to be big (or biggesh for me) at around 16” by 24”. I was thinking of maybe doing ink washes, but chances are I will just fall back on my usual coffee washes and a painful amount of straight india ink line work.
