  • Since this sort of thing has been requested of me for years and the sketch I posted yesterday got such a good response, I decided to make a video of my digital “inking” process using Manga Studio EX. I rarely use Manga Studio to do finished line work like this and much prefer to do such things on paper, but since this was just a “for fun” piece I decided not to waste the paper and do it digitally. 

    While I have no idea if this will be informative to anyone let alone even interesting, here are some bullet points that may be worth mentioning:

    - I avoid using the “fill” tool at all costs and only use one sized “brush”. This is mainly due to the fact that when I ink on paper, I only use one brush and rely on my own movements and control to vary the line weight. Not to mention I am lazy, and find switching brush sizes digitally or otherwise a pain in the ass.

    - I second and third guess almost every line I make. Call it OCD or whatever you’d like, I am rarely pleased with lines I make the first time in any media. Half the time you can see me doing test lines, which helps my hand have momentary muscle memory for when I draw the actual line. Think of it like making circular motions with your hand before you put the pen to paper to draw a circle. 

    - I would be totally screwed without the “rotate canvas” function. Part of the reason I love Manga Studio so much is how well it handles canvas rotation, which is essential for how I draw. 

    - This is about 90 minutes of work condensed into 5 minutes.

    There may or may not be more of these process videos down the road. There is a fine line between being informative of your process, and giving away all of your secrets…and unfortunately, it is a line I have become very wary of over the years. Also, the fact that I do not have a digital camcorder seriously inhibits what of my process I am able to actually document.
