Mid-week last week I was contacted by art director Randy Minor from New York Magazine to do a portrait of New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo. Randy and I have worked together in the past, but not on anything I could really sink my teeth into. After a few weeks of disheartening pieces, I was ready to really put my all into this thing. And while unfortunately it got knocked down from a full page illustration to just a spot illustration, I honestly think that this is one of the best portraits I have ever done.
Here is a breakdown of all of the active layers that went into this piece both digital as well as hand done and scanned. And while you can see 40 separate layers here, about 5 or 6 layers of stencils and templates went into the making each individual layer.
And in other news: It appears that no matter how long I tried to fight it off, as of this morning I am officially sick. My bubble-boy life style seems to be backfiring on me. Oh well, at least I have the Wii U to keep me company.
